In a bold declaration, Milwaukee Bucks coach Doc Rivers has confirmed that the franchise does not intend to sideline superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo for the remainder of the season. While the timeline for his recovery from a calf strain remains unclear, Rivers emphasized that the two-time MVP will return to play as soon as he is fit.
During a press briefing prior to the game, which took place just after the trade deadline, Rivers addressed concerns about Antetokounmpo’s future. The speculation around the star player had created significant buzz throughout the league in the lead-up to this pivotal moment.
"He’s going to play when he’s healthy," Rivers stated. "We’ve just got to ensure he’s in the best condition possible. He’s getting close now, putting in the work, and looking good. I would say we hope to see him back sooner rather than later."
Currently, the Bucks find themselves in a challenging position, sitting 12th in the Eastern Conference standings. There’s a strategic angle to consider—resting Antetokounmpo could potentially enhance their draft prospects. Milwaukee has a chance to select either from their current position or from the New Orleans Pelicans' pick in the upcoming first round, depending on which option is less advantageous.
As of now, the Bucks have recorded a 15-15 record with Antetokounmpo on the court, contrasting sharply with a disappointing 5-14 when he’s absent.
Antetokounmpo last played on January 23, when he sustained a right calf strain. At the time of his injury, he anticipated being sidelined for four to six weeks, although the team has not provided an official update on his recovery timeline.
The atmosphere within the Bucks organization has noticeably improved following the trade deadline, regardless of whether Antetokounmpo is playing or not. His status had been a source of ongoing anxiety for the team, with many players feeling the pressure of persistent rumors regarding his potential departure.
“It definitely addresses the elephant in the room that we’ve been dealing with for the past few weeks and even longer,” remarked guard Gary Harris. "Now it’s essential that we focus and concentrate. The rumors and speculations are behind us now."
After the deadline passed, Antetokounmpo took to social media to share an uplifting message: "Legends don’t chase. They attract," paired with a meme from the film "The Wolf of Wall Street" featuring Leonardo DiCaprio’s character emphatically declaring, "I’m not leaving."
Rivers expressed his relief at the situation, stating, "I think Giannis’ tweet brought the team together in a unifying way."
Throughout this season, Rivers has maintained that the discussions surrounding a possible exit for Antetokounmpo were exaggerated. "I kept saying it, but no one seemed to want to believe me," he commented. "I never wavered in my stance. It bothered me because the chatter felt like a deliberate attempt to push him out of Milwaukee. But I’m glad those discussions are finished."
However, it’s important to note that the uncertainty regarding Antetokounmpo's future with the Bucks has merely been postponed, not resolved. He could choose to stay with Milwaukee for just a few months or commit for several years.
In October, he will be eligible to sign a lucrative four-year contract extension worth up to $275 million. Currently, he is completing the final year of a three-year, $186 million extension that he signed in 2023, which includes a $62.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season.
Antetokounmpo has consistently expressed his affection for playing in Milwaukee, but he has also voiced a desire to be part of a roster dedicated to vying for championships. In 2021, he led the Bucks to their first title in fifty years.
To bolster their competitive window, Milwaukee has made several strategic moves in recent years. However, the team has faced challenges, having exited in the first round of the playoffs for three consecutive seasons. Their sluggish start this season puts their streak of nine straight playoff appearances in jeopardy.
General Manager Jon Horst’s goal is to persuade Antetokounmpo that the Bucks can quickly return to championship contention if he chooses to remain with the team.
Horst has a history of making impactful decisions. For instance, Antetokounmpo agreed to a contract extension in 2020 after the Bucks acquired Jrue Holiday, a move that ultimately contributed to their 2021 championship victory. He signed another extension in 2023 following the Bucks' significant acquisition of Damian Lillard.
Last summer, Horst demonstrated his innovative approach by waiving the injured Lillard and restructuring the remaining funds owed to him over several years, consequently creating salary cap flexibility to sign Myles Turner.
As the Bucks navigate this complex landscape, the spotlight remains on Antetokounmpo’s forthcoming decisions and how they will shape the future of the franchise.
