UK Weather: Storm Ingrid, Heavy Rain, and Flooding Warnings (2026)

As heavy rains and potential flooding loom over parts of the UK, the Met Office has issued a series of weather warnings, including a more serious amber alert. This warning covers regions such as eastern Scotland, Northern Ireland, and various areas of England and Wales, all of which are bracing for significant rainfall amounts that could lead to flooding.

In addition to the rain, strong winds will be felt, especially in the northeastern region of Scotland, creating a rather challenging weather scenario. As we approach Friday, the situation is set to escalate with the arrival of Storm Ingrid, a storm named by the Portuguese weather service due to its expected impact on their territories. This storm will usher in intense rain and increasingly strong winds in the southwestern parts of England and Wales.

Currently, eastern Scotland is experiencing heavy downpours, prompting an amber warning from the Met Office for regions like Grampian, Angus, and Perth and Kinross until 18:00 GMT today. Rainfall totals could reach between 60-80 mm, with the potential for even higher amounts—up to 100-120 mm—over elevated areas. Some locations may see total accumulations exceed 150 mm since Wednesday evening. Such levels of precipitation are likely to cause surface water accumulation and river flooding.

Moreover, a yellow warning is in effect across much of eastern Scotland, where widespread rainfall accumulations of 30-60 mm are anticipated. The Met Office cautions that due to the ground already being saturated from previous rainfall and snow melting, flooding could occur in various spots.

In addition, a strong south-easterly wind is contributing to a notably unpleasant atmosphere in northeast Scotland. On Thursday, further yellow warnings have been issued for southeast Wales, Somerset, and Devon from 08:00 to 16:00, as well as for Northern Ireland from 10:00 to 23:59. The persistent heavy rains in these areas, falling on already saturated ground, could lead to flooding and disruptions in transportation.

As of Thursday morning, nearly 160 flood warnings were active across England, Scotland, and Wales, indicating a widespread concern regarding flooding hazards.

Meanwhile, the rest of the UK is experiencing predominantly cloudy and breezy conditions, with intermittent rain and drizzle.

On Friday, Storm Ingrid is expected to have a direct impact on the UK, particularly in the south-west, as its center approaches the region and north-west France. Wind gusts could reach up to 65 mph, which, while not as severe as the nearly 100 mph winds recorded during Storm Goretti in southwest England, could still create challenges, particularly for travel and outdoor activities.

The windy conditions are expected to persist into Saturday as Storm Ingrid stalls to the southwest. While southern areas face the brunt of this storm, the rest of the UK will experience brisk southeast to easterly winds, drawing colder air from northeast Europe. Consequently, temperatures are projected to dip over the weekend and into the following week, potentially falling to 4 to 6 degrees Celsius below the average for late January.

Additionally, this easterly wind may bring occasional wintry showers, possibly resulting in snow for certain regions of the UK. However, the exact locations and amounts of snowfall remain uncertain, although wintry conditions are likely.
