In light of severe weather conditions, Oakland University has made the critical decision to shut down its entire campus, ensuring the safety of its students and staff. This closure will take effect on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, beginning at 5 a.m.
As the storm approaches, the university anticipates that this closure will remain in place for the entirety of the day, with plans to resume normal operations by 5 a.m. on Wednesday, assuming weather conditions improve sufficiently.
During this time, faculty and staff are not required to come to work, and there is no expectation for remote work arrangements. However, essential personnel who need to be on-site should check in with their supervisors to understand any specific reporting requirements that may apply to them.
It's important to note that all in-person classes scheduled for that day will be canceled, and most university operations will be temporarily halted, with a few essential functions continuing. Faculty members have the option to hold their classes online but must inform their students ahead of time about any changes. Moreover, students should not worry about being marked absent during this closure period.
If instructors opt to transition their instructions to a virtual format, they are expected to provide appropriate make-up materials to ensure that all students can keep up with the coursework. Additionally, lab sections may be rescheduled, but this will be communicated in advance to all involved.
Importantly, no assignments or exams will be due while the campus is closed due to the emergency weather situation. Students who have questions regarding their classes should reach out directly to their instructors for clarification.
Furthermore, all extracurricular activities and events outside of regular classes are canceled unless stated otherwise. Decisions regarding any changes to the university’s operational status during severe weather will be made based on the evolving conditions.
Stay safe and stay informed – the well-being of everyone in our university community is paramount.
