Declan Murphy's Super League Journey: A Unique Story Unveiled
Rugby league has been a whirlwind adventure for Declan Murphy, a young talent who has quickly risen through the ranks. In just 12 months, he's gone from being released by Saracens to signing his first Super League contract with Hull KR. This is his story, a tale of trials, turbulence, and a unique journey to the top.
The 20-year-old outside-back's path to rugby league began with a release from Saracens at the end of the 2024/25 rugby union season. He then embarked on a trial with Wigan Warriors' reserves, exploring a switch of codes. It was during this time that Salford Red Devils took notice, offering him his first taste of Super League just months into his transition. A handful of appearances proved enough to showcase his potential, and Hull KR quickly moved to secure his services with a three-year deal ahead of the 2026 season.
Murphy admits his experience at Salford was different from his teammates, as he joined late in the 2026 campaign with a clear goal of putting himself in the spotlight. He said, 'It was a challenging time, being released from Saracens, but then I went to Salford. I came in quite late, so I didn't feel the full impact like some of the boys did. I came to play and make a name for myself, but for them, it was tough.'
Despite the challenges, Murphy's appearances demonstrated his Super League potential, leading Hull KR to snap him up under Willie Peters. This decision was made just a week before Murphy faced the eventual treble-winning champions last September. Now, he's days away from completing his first full pre-season in rugby league, and he's wasted no time setting his sights high at Sewell Group Craven Park.
Murphy's time at Hull KR has been a learning curve, with a different environment from rugby union. He says, 'It's been tough, but really good. The boys have been welcoming, and the coaches have been great. They've made it easy for me, breaking everything down bit by bit. It's been easy to learn and get on board, and I've been enjoying it.'
Despite the challenge of Arthur Mourgue wearing the number one shirt in 2026, Murphy is realistic about the opportunity ahead. Being immersed in Hull KR's environment, especially during a season with the World Club Challenge and a historic trip to Las Vegas, can only aid his development. He adds, 'Even if I'm not playing, it'll be good to be around it and experience it all. I'm here for three years, so I've got time to develop under Willie. I'm hungry and want to make that matchday squad every week.'
