Champions League Knockout Qualification Scenarios! Who's In, Who's Out? (2026)

The Champions League is reaching its thrilling climax, and the race to secure a spot in the top eight and qualify for the knockout stages is tighter than ever!

With just one round of fixtures left, the pressure is on for all the clubs involved. While Arsenal have already booked their place in the last 16, joined by Bayern Munich, the rest of the field is still battling it out.

So, who's got what it takes to make it through?

Arsenal, the current leaders, have an impressive record of seven wins from seven matches. A simple draw at home against Kairat Almaty will be enough to secure top spot, but they'll have to keep their eyes on Bayern Munich, who are hot on their heels.

In terms of seeding, the top two teams will be paired in the draw for the last 16, facing either the winners of the play-off game between 15th and 18th or 16th and 17th. It's a tight race, and even the smallest details could make a huge difference.

Bayern Munich, needing just a point against PSV Eindhoven, are in a strong position to secure a top-two finish. The top two teams also enjoy the advantage of playing the second leg at home in every round until the final, a significant boost.

But here's where it gets really exciting!

Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Tottenham, all with a chance to secure direct entry into the last-16 draw, are in a three-way battle. A win on matchday eight will be crucial for these teams.

Spurs face a tough test against already-eliminated Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany, while Arne Slot's side take on Qarabag, who are still in with a chance of making the top eight.

"It's a huge advantage to avoid the play-offs and ease the burden of our busy schedule," Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk told Uefa.

Madrid, meanwhile, travel to Benfica, managed by the legendary Jose Mourinho, who need a win to keep their play-off hopes alive.

Behind this trio, a group of eight teams, including holders Paris St-Germain, are all within striking distance of the top eight. Newcastle, Chelsea, and Manchester City are all in this group, and a win could be crucial, but even then, goal difference could decide their fate.

Eddie Howe's Newcastle face a daunting trip to Paris, while Chelsea travel to Napoli and Manchester City host Galatasaray.

Remarkably, despite 16 teams still in contention for the remaining top-eight spots, only two matches next Wednesday will see these teams face each other directly. Newcastle's trip to Paris and Borussia Dortmund's home game against Inter Milan are the key fixtures.

The fight for the play-offs is just as intense, with everyone down to Ajax in 32nd still in with a chance. Only the bottom four teams, Frankfurt, Slavia Prague, Villarreal, and Kairat, have been officially eliminated.

The table is incredibly tight, with just three points separating Marseille in 19th and Ajax. Even Dortmund, in 16th place and still hoping for a top-eight finish, haven't secured their play-off spot yet.

Again, the fixtures have conspired to create only two direct match-ups between play-off hopefuls - Ajax against Olympiacos and Marseille's trip to Club Brugge.

So, who will make it through? The stage is set for an exciting conclusion to the Champions League group stage.
