Dr. Hannabeck highlights the impact on pharmacies, where a simple pack of Aspirin has skyrocketed in price from 69p to over £3 overnight. This sudden price surge, coupled with a two-month delay in compensation, significantly affects cash flow, especially during challenging financial times. Despite these challenges, pharmacists are working tirelessly to provide substitute medications.
To address this crisis, Dr. Hannabeck urges patients to take action. She encourages writing to local MPs to advocate for adequate remuneration for pharmacies. The government must heed these concerns, as the cost of these medicines becomes increasingly unbearable for manufacturers, threatening the collapse of the supply chain. The situation is further exacerbated by a nationwide shortage of co-codamol 30/500 tablets, essential for managing severe pain.
The NHS Grampian has announced limited supplies of this medication from early February 2026 until the summer, with no simple alternatives available to meet demand. This crisis demands urgent attention and collective action to ensure patients receive the necessary medications.
