Which? argues that online marketplaces have become a major conduit for unsafe and illegal imports to reach UK consumers. These platforms often act as intermediaries for third-party sellers, making it difficult to hold them accountable. The group is calling for stronger enforcement powers and greater accountability for third-party seller listings.
Regulatory Measures and Consumer Advice
The UK's Product Regulation and Metrology Act, implemented in July 2025, gives the government the power to place obligations on online marketplaces. Which? is advocating for the government to make online marketplaces legally responsible for unsafe products, setting a global standard for product safety in the digital age.
For consumers, the advice is clear: buy from recognized brands, be cautious of very cheap big-brand chargers, and look for the CE or UKCA marks and importer details.

Which? has presented a petition, signed by 150,000 people, to the UK Department of Business and Trade Minister, Kate Dearden, calling for the government to regulate online marketplaces and fine them for breaches. This is a crucial step towards ensuring consumer safety in the digital age.
